Day 4 of 365 - Janyary 4, 2012

Clearly I have a lot to learn about photography. I used today's Capture Your 365's prompt again for my POTD "the flower mode/a small f/number/a blurred background". I have no problem using the macro setting, I've used it a lot on my point and shoot, but when I played around with my aperture on manual mode I wasn't able to get as close up to my subject as I could using my macro setting and when I did achieve a smaller depth of field or f number, my camera wouldn't let me shoot. I could focus but it just wouldn't shoot. If I pulled back I could, but then the f number got higher as I adjusted my focus. I'm going to have to take a photography course as I hate having to keep going back to my book.

I also noticed the shutter speed change at times during this experiment. I want to ask questions and have them answered now! lol Anyway, the whole aperture is confusing enough in itself but I think I'm starting to get my head around it, the larger the number, the larger the depth of field, the smaller the number, the smaller the DOF. I just have to figure out how to get it to work the way I want it to. Or as I'm sure as most of you are thinking, no, YOU just have to figure out how it works and use it the right way! I'll get it. As I said in an earlier post, I'm committed to this project and my goal of becoming a better photographer and I've got the whole year to do it. It'll be interesting to look back on these earlier posts and hopefully see how far I've come. Oh, and by the way, I chose this little guy as my subject because he reminded me of my most favourite dog to dogsit, Winnie. Those of you who know me I'm sure will see the resemblance.

  3. Kathy, I'm not sure how much you've known about playing a DSLR. Here is a great site for you to explore: http://www.dolcepics.com/tutorials/ All is about how to get a sweet picture in simple language. I've learned a lot there. Have fun!
